About the Area

Located in the rolling hills of Central Texas on the Colorado River, Austin has a frontier heritage, a high-tech future, and an outstanding collection of world-class museums, art, amusement parks, recreational activities, fine dining, night life, and a booming job market. It has blue skies and sunshine almost 300 days a year. It is the seat of state government and an educational mecca, and it has doubled its population every 20 years for the past century.

The University of Texas is one of the top 15 U.S. patent holders and top 15 global patent holders for all gene and DNA sequences, giving the city 85 bioscience companies and a vital biotechnology industry. Cutting edge research has made UT a major asset for Central Texas with the Institute for Cellular and Molecular Biology, its College of Pharmacy, and College of Engineering, which is ranked as one of the top ten engineering graduate schools in the country.

Austin is wired. It has a hot computer industry, and more than 60 percent of its residents surf the net. Dell Computer Corporation is one of the region’s top private employers with approximately 17,000 on its local payroll. Because its computer industry is diversified, Austin’s high-tech industry is one of the few worldwide to post growth in the recent economic downturn. Few areas can match Austin’s employment in the computer sector, which is almost 10 times the national average.

Austin is on the move—in logistics and distribution. With an international airport, major thoroughfares and railway lines, Austin has become a major mover of cargo. Transportation planning, management and distribution is one of the fastest growing industries in the nation. That means a lot of cargo is going through Austin-Bergstrom International Airport, the sixth fastest growing major airport in the nation.

If you’re looking to boogie, the “Live Music Capital of the World,” is the place to do it. Austin has 120 live music venues and hosts the South by Southwest Conference and the popular PBS program, “Austin City Limits”—which features some of the country’s hottest rock, blues and country performers. It also has five independent record labels with national distribution.

For the off-beat, you can’t beat Austin’s Mexican fee-tailed bats. Every day at dusk, the world’s largest urban colony swoops out from beneath the Congress Avenue Bridge to clean out the city’s insect population. It’s just one more reason to call Austin home.
